Besides of the CZ (cubic zirconia), there are other crystal stones we often use on the jewelry, such as crystal glass, the most famous one is SWAROVSKI and Preciosa.
The difference between CZ and crystal glass is the material, CZ is zirconium dioxide, crystal glass is is produced by melting a mixture of quartz sand, minium, potash and soda at high temperatures.
The hardness is about 7 which is less than CZ hardness 8.5. So crystal is often setting on soft metal jewelry, like silver, gold, brass rather than stainless steel or tungsten. But it also can glued on high hardness metal jewelry instead of setting on. But it will need a foiling base to keep it brilliant after glue.
It’s easy to produce crystal in different colors, such as mixing some metal element or coating with special metallic chemical coatings. For example, Aurora Borealis, or “AB”, gives the surface a rainbow appearance.
By using crystal glass, it help reduce the cost of setting process, especially on stainless steel jewelry and offer more options for consumers.
